Letters from the CTO, vol 5

Dashboards, MCP and Quotas

Dashboards, MCP and Quotas

Get in touch

Another two weeks have passed and it is time for a new Baselight update. This letter is going to be a bit more visual, as I want to share with you a few features that we’ve been working on and that you should expect in the next few releases.

Dashboards are almost here!

Let’s start with one of the most requested features by users and members from our internal team: dashboards. Baselight queries are great, but with our current design telling a story and sharing full-fledged insights with a collection of charts and analytics, all found at different URLs, is hard. You either had to share charts one-by-one on your social media, or create a doc or something to collect all the charts for your insights. This was limiting what users could do (and share) with Baselight, and we had to fix this.

The solution to this? Dashboards. With Baselight dashboards you will be able to organise different blocks of charts, text, tables and numbers to tell a story and share end-to-end analyses and insights built with Baselight.

We’re active users of Baselight and love sharing our insights with the world. Waiting to be at a desktop just to view dashboards was frustrating. That’s why dashboards are being designed to work beautifully on mobile, so insights are easy to access wherever you are. Baselight content should be sharable and directly consumable from any device, at any time.

We are finalising the last stage of internal testing and if everything goes as planned you should start enjoying dashboards in production in the next 2-3 weeks.

Our MCP server in action

The next big feature that I am really excited about is one that I’ve been hyping for a few letters now: our Baselight MCP server. The feature is fully implemented and has already been rolled out for a small group of beta testers, and let me tell you something: from the feedback we’ve been receiving they are loving it!

Here are a few examples of how people are using it:

If you want to become part of these small groups of beta testers just hit us up at hello@baselight.ai!

Tiers and quotas

Which brings me to the last topic of the day. Many of you may be wondering, why not roll out the MCP server feature to all users immediately and run a beta with a small group of users? Usage quotas.

Since the release of the MCP server we’ve seen the number of queries and data scanned on Baselight increase significantly, and it seemed like a good moment to start enforcing some quota and designing our different usage tiers. This will become even more important once we release the next feature we are working on, which will bring Baselight to the next level.

See you in two weeks!

Apart from all of these cool features, we’ve also spent a lot of time this week taking the opportunity that half of the team was on vacation to refactor and improve some of our code bases so it was less disruptive to prepare everything for the next stage of Baselight. I am really looking forward to sharing with everyone what we are planning next.

But in the meantime I leave you with my talk at Web3Summit from a few weeks ago that glimpses a bit why we started building Baselight and where we want to take it next:

And as always, any feedback, suggestions, or asks, and more than welcome! See you in two weeks.
